World Brain propose une excursion à travers différentes formes de folklores : data centers, magnétisme animal, l’Internet comme un mythe, la vie intérieure des rats, comment réunir un réseau de chercheurs dans la forêt, comment survivre avec Wikipédia, comment connecter les chatons et les pierres…Le monde où nous vivons évoque une fiction de Borges. D’ailleurs, si quelqu’un voulait écrire une suite à Fictions, il n’aurait qu’à mettre bout à bout des coupures de presse. World Brain est constitué en grande partie de matériaux trouvés : vidéos téléchargées sur Youtube, images, compte rendus scientifiques ou pseudo scientifiques, fils d’actualités… L’utopie de la connexion universelle entraîne l’humanité dans un projet pharaonique : la construction d’un espace mondial spécifiquement conçu pour le confort des données avec la création de centaines de milliers de data centers, interconnectés par des câbles sous-marins ou souterrains. World Brain de Stéphane Degoutin et Gwenola Wagon entraîne le spectateur dans cette machine prométhéenne dans laquelle beaucoup croient voir émerger un cerveau mondial dont nous ne serions que les neurones.

World Brain takes us on a journey through various kinds of folklore: data centres, animal magnetism, the internet as a myth, the inner lives of rats, how to bring together a network of researchers in the forest, how to survive with Wikipedia, how to connect kittens and stones, etc. The world we live in resembles a Borgesian story. Indeed, if someone wanted to write a sequel to Borges’ Fictions, they could do so simply by putting together press cuttings. World Brain is largely made up of found footage: videos uploaded onto Youtube, images, scientific or pseudo-scientific reports, news feeds, etc. The utopia of universal connection draws humanity into a mammoth project: the construction of a global area specifically designed for data convenience, with the creation of hundreds of thousands of data centres, interconnected by underground and undersea cables. World Brain by Stéphane Degoutin and Gwenola Wagon draws the viewer into this Promethean machine in which many claim to see the emergence of a global brain wherein we would merely be the neurons.
