Il n’aura fallu que quelques années à la jeune roumaine pour se faire un nom dans le monde de l’électro. En 2007, alors que le paysage des musiques électroniques roumaines est bouleversé par l’explosion du mouvement “Rominimal” (courant largement influencé par le DJ germano-chilien Ricardo Villalobos), Aleksa Alaska se tourne vers des courants plus marginaux et alternatifs. Au fil des années, elle se forge un univers musical intrigant et singulier fortement imprégné de la musique industrielle des années 80 et 90. Ses talents de DJ l’amènent à voyager dans le monde entier et ses passages radios sur Red Light Radio, NTS, Rinse France ou encore Intergalactic FM témoignent de la reconnaissance apportée par ses pairs.
Laurel Halo
Laurel Halo redessine à chaque nouvel album les contours de sa palette electronica protéiforme. Si Chance of Rain, entièrement instrumental, creusait brillamment le sillon d’une electro-techno teintée d’inflexions jazz, son album Dust apparaît comme un savant mélange de house et de pop-songs intelligemment construites. Avec son dernier EP, l’américaine explore une facette plus ambiante de son œuvre électronique. Riches d’influences diverses et aux confins de contrées mystérieuses, ses sets laissent planer une étrangeté envoûtante et se caractérisent par leurs étonnantes facultés à transcender les genres.
XL.IKS
Avec une approche de sound designer, XL.IKS s’affranchit dans ses compositions d’une certaine musicalité pour sculpter et travailler les matières sonores. À coup de breaks et de nappes aériennes, il parcourt les genres et décline une multitude de sonorités différentes afin de façonner une ambiance enivrante et sensible. Avec une forte tonalité expérimentale, XL.IKS est un producteur prometteur à découvrir absolument en live.
Dreamrec (VJ)
Nourri par les images distordues des VHS des années 90, l’artiste visuel bucarestois Silviu George Visan est un des pionniers de la scène VJ roumaine. S’inspirant de formes géologiques ou encore de motifs trouvés dans la nature, Dreamrec tente de créer diverses strates de “réalités alternatives” qui se superposent les unes aux autres. Sa capacité à créer de véritables univers fantaisistes et immersifs ont fait de lui un fer de lance de la scène créative roumaine. Aujourd’hui il se produit en live dans les plus grands clubs du monde (Fabric London, Liquid Room Tokyo etc.) et répond à des commandes de videomapping monumentaux comme à Dubaï ou au Victoria Albert Museum à Londres.

Even by the standards of 21st century electronic music culture, Aleksa Alaska’s rise to international DJ status has been dizzyingly rapid. After deciding in early 2016 to devote more time to recording mixes, the Bucharest-based artist has quickly become one of the most talked-about radio hosts, selectors and club DJs in Europe.
Although a passionate fan of intriguing, alternative and experimental sounds for over a decade, Aleksa had little inclination to take up DJing when she was younger. As the years passed, Aleksa found that her interest in intense, eccentric and otherworldly music from the ‘90s was out of step with the “Rominimal” minimal techno scene, and a desire to do her own thing and share the music she loved grew by the year. Soon, online radio stations and websites started requesting mixes, from fast-rising Bristol outlet Noods (where she hosts the Subterranean Modern show, which is dedicated to showcasing abstract electronica and dark ‘80s industrial tracks plucked from dusty, cassette-only releases) and legendary Amsterdam institution Red Light Radio, to NTS, Rinse France, Intergalactic FM, LYL and Red Bull Radio.
Laurel Halo
Heavy, mutilated strains of electronic music with influence from the sounds of Detroit, UK and Germany – Laurel Halo’s music is shapeshifting, moody and ecstatic. The Michigan-born and Berlin-based artist has been a mainstay of the London-based label Hyperdub, who released her breakout, divisive debut album Quarantine in 2012. The record received critical acclaim, and was named Wire Magazine’s Album of the Year. Since then she’s released two more albums – 2013’s Chance of Rain for Hyperdub, 2015’s In Situ for Honest Jon’s – and toured extensively with a live hardware PA. In addition, Laurel hosts a regular show on Berlin Community Radio, having originally cut her teeth as a freeform DJ on the legendary WCBN-FM station in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She has collaborated with John Cale, Julia Holter, David Borden, Daniel Wohl, and Metahaven among others.Halo has also composed the soundtrack for Still Be Here, a Transmediale/CTM film commission starring the Japanese virtual popstar, Hatsune Miku, which debuted at Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and was most recently shown at the Barbican Hall in London. Her latest album, Dust, is due out on Hyperdub in late June.
XL.IKS
With a sound designer approach, XL.IKS push beyond the musicality in his production in order to shape and form sound materials. Thanks to various breaks and aerial synth pads, he passes through different styles of music in order to design a sensitive and addictive ambiance. With a strong experimental tone, XL.IKS is a promising producer to be seen live on stage.
